Yes, it was a prison at one time. Everything is still there intact. It is quite amazing that people don't know about it. Like I said, it is just about the only place where you can see a chantry bridge today. However, we are talking about Rotherham and the council aren't known for supporting such things. Their idea of a tourist attraction is "Rotherham By The Sea"! This consists of dumping a load of sand by the fountain in All Saints square just below All Saints Church and put out a load of deck chairs, so that the local chavs can feel like they're at the seaside. Makes you proud to live here.
Having been brought up in Rotherham, i had no idea that it had any history of the Civil War
I can see the Chantry Bridge action being a nice little scenario although the posh boys from the Grammar School may need some reinforcements from Kimberworth ..
