Special rules for ECW

Postby irondog » Wed May 09, 2012 5:01 pm

I ave read the other thread about the ECW and I have to agree. They should be treated different since the operated different than earlier pike and shot armies. As the pike and shot units worked together from what I read.
I can understand the separation in the rules if working on a smaller scale, suck as 1 regiment is represented ie; you have Lord Brookes regiment of foot, commander Lord Brooke, 1st unit Major pike and shot, 2nd unit Captain, etc, etc, etc.

But I want to make each unit a regiment and each regiment have 2 shot and 1 pike. So here is my question,

Has anyone done, worked with, played with stats, such as this? I also not a big fan of "I hit your unit 3 times so 2 hot are hit and 1 pike" type of hit. I prefer the unit loses hits as a whole and the fire/ melee go down with out any sort of extra figuring.

Does this make any scene?

We have played two ECW games so far. The consensus within our little group is that foot work really well. You don't want to separate your pike and shot because of their relative vulnerabilities. Being limited to a shot-pike-shot formation would lack tactical Flexibility.

Our last game featured hedged enclosures and the separate shot sleeve units fought it out over the hedgerows with the pikes protecting flanks from cavalry and outflanking moves. With a mixed single formation the dynamic of the hedge fight would not have been there at all. The separate components felt right to us.

Oh and by the way, the game was fun. I have tried other (very respected) rules that aim to simulate ECW combat in detail that have turned out to be very dull to play.

I have answered my own question,
I am going to treat a Regiment as follows:

HTH: 8, Shooting: 4, Morale: 5+, Stamina: 4

HTH was upped to account for the musket/pike size. Shooting added both shot wings. Morale was dropped to a 5 since most pike unit lost there armor. Stamina was increased due to the size.

Pike will only get benefit vs cavalry if they are not shaken or disordered. I will give this a whirl and may drop the musket firepower by 1. The real killer in this period was cavalry hitting disordered infantry and running them down.

Also I think I am going to ignore the Hedgehog since I have not read of ECW units doing it. I could be wrong, and would not doubt it.
Also Forlorn Hope are treated as command shot except they are skirmish.

If you want to do a 100% shot unit drop the HTH down and maybe add a die for number of muskets, and give them first fire and/ firelock. in 1645 there was at least one regiment armed for Parliament like this.
