What next?

Postby Paul @ Warlord Games » Sat Dec 17, 2011 9:31 am

Four years ago we started Warlord Games with a plastic boxed set of Roman legionaries.

Over that time we've added stacks more to the range and every time we think we're about done with them a few more ideas raise their heads above the parapet.

Whilst we still have a few things to release for the Imperial Roman range it'd be fun to hear what you all think could be added to the range in case we're missing something. No promises we'll make what you suggest, but you never know!

Over to you...
Cheers,

Paul Sawyer

I'd like to see an expansion of the range to cover later centuries - but I guess that is more a case of new range(s) than adding to this one really

Troop types missing from the current range - Roman horse archers and contarii I guess spring to mind. For something a bit different you could do marching camp defences with the stakes set up as giant caltrops as seems to be a view on how they were used.

Isn't it conjectural for contarii to fall within the Imperial Roman period? Always thought they were just after it.

Depends what dates you mean by "Imperial Roman" I guess.

IIRC the first contarii unit was raised by Trajan - ala I Ulpia contariorum - and the Warlord Romans look very suitable for Trajan's armies to me, you even have the Dacian opponents :D

I'd like to see some generals and officers clearly steeped in the effeminate vices of Rome.

Gladiators, armed mob and Jewish Zealots please... When not conquering fresh territory the Legions were often a 'pax keeping force' and some opponents of this sort would be brilliant.

Having been ignored and spent some time on the naughty step....sorry
I would love to see:
Some gladiators/armed slaves
Some legionaries in light order (I imagine running to the walls after call to arms..helmet, weapon belt ,shield)...
A baggage cart + oxen =accompanying figures
Perhaps a four horse chariot

plastic sudes sprue.
plastic wicker work for walls.

I'm with Nik - equites sagittari and equites contarii please! Oh and equites cataphractarii too please. At least one unit existed from Trajan's reign onwards - the Ala I Gallorum et Pannoniorum cataphractaria, stationed in Moesia Inferior.

There's a tombstone in the museum at Vercovicivm (Housesteads) on Hadrian's Wall, depicting an archer with a pointy 'eastern' helmet, but short 'western' tunic - presumably he's from Cohors Primae Hamiorum Saggitariorum - the First Cohort of Hamian Archers. Some archers like that would be nice. Conversely, some command figures in 'eastern' dress, to suit the eastern archer models, would be nice too!

A jumbo or two - perhaps one with Claudius aboard, and another more 'fighty' one, would be nice for those who want to do the Invasion of Britannia.

A military 'dispatch rider' or messenger - riding hell-for-leather, cloak trailing in the wind, feather attached to his spear.

I'm sure I've got other ideas - just need to remember them!

The Romans realy would need horse archers. And a legionary training scene might do a nice vignette, fencing with wooden swords against the wooden enemy. With a centurio giving some "hard" advice.

And a military punishment? Pour encourager les autres.

Some Roman train men helping to defend the camp would be nice, perhaps in addition some making fodder for the anmimals. Many battles started with such a group getting ambushed.

In addition to the medicus there is need for a horse doctor and/or a smith.

I would like to have some Celts with a felled tree, using it to ram a Roman defence. Some guys with torches might be usefull against a wooden defence.

Not to forget the missing Sarmatian Horse archers. They would be a good base to make miniatures for a Parthian army too.
