Ancient Greek Hoplites

Postby mobal » Thu Mar 08, 2012 12:50 pm

Hi,

If i hear Greek hoplites i imagined something like the Macedonian Phalangites and not like the ancient Greek from WG. holding spears above shoulder. So i was wondering how historical accurate are they?
I really like the models, but i like history to and i was wondering :p .
Probably i buy them even if the answer is that they aren't really historic.

They're accurate enough. There is a nice variety of heads and the armour is right. The overarm spear thrust is accurate too. The Spear isn't as long as the Macedonian pike and could be used either overarm or underarm and could be thrown too, though it isn't a javelin. The figures are a little bigger and chunkier than the Warlord/Immortal ones and they are probably the best figures that WF have produced, though I haven't seen their Samurai range in the flesh. The warlord Hoplites, ex Immortal miniatures, are about as accurate an ancient Greek Hoplite as you going to get.
I think you should buy a few boxes they are fantastic.

Look forward to seeing the photo's of your finished Greeks!

ancients greeks/ spartans question on 17/03

Postby mobal » Sat Mar 17, 2012 9:36 pm

I got since yesterday my first 2 boxes of hoplites and 1 of the spartans. 1 box of greeks is glued. And indeed it are wonderfull models. is it right that i used the cloting on the schields for my first rank? and the two 8 shaped shields as captains?
And an other question, in the spartan box there are 4 little sprues wit 2 body's, 9 spartan heads, swords, a spear and 4 strange things, first i was thinking it is a hat. But after dry testing it looks just strange as a hat, or do i miss something? Can someone tell me what is is and how to use it?

thanks

I haven't got the Spartans, so have no idea what all those funny bits are.

The 8 shaped shields, or Dyplon, could be used to depict your unit leaders if you wanted. Can't remember if there are enough round shields to avoid using them. The cloth or apron that hangs from the shield can go on any shield whether in the front rank or any other. It was fitted to help deflect arrows.

If it are hats, how can i make them fit?

And you have to use one Dyplon ( yes i have learnt a new fanncy word :p )
For the apron (jeej more new words ) is it logical that you use it for the first rank i think. First i was thinking that it is a sort of protection for the legs; In the moto, what you can't see you can't hit.

Thanks for the explenation.

Are you talking about wee things that look a bit like metal beards?

I think I found them and didn't really get what they were for either. I assumed they were an alternative face protection or something, but I left them out anyway, whatever they were.

It's not the bit of 'groin' armour is it? to be hung from the old style armour?

I know nothing of this period so can't comment, but that just tickled me to imagine two ancient Greeks passing each other one with this strange object on his face and the other with it on his groin and both thinking "idiot"! Be interesting to find out what it is though as I'm planning on a box in the future.
