But are we ever really going to want exact numbers especially with BP. Even other rules at 1:20, 1:50 or whatever exact numbers are not really an issue.
I need a cuppa and lie down. Its all to hard.

Battles and Leaders of the American Civil War (4 volumes) used to be quite readily available and not too expensive. That has most if not all the Orbats in, albeit they are not too easy to read.

As for AWI, the two scenario books for British Grenadier has most of the detailed orders of battle in them.

I've got the heavily abridged one-volume version. Great book.

The 4 volumes take up alot of space! There were also a series of scenario booklets brought out for Johnny Reb 2nd Ed rules which has most ACW orders of battle in.

The forthcoming AWI supplement presumably will have a few OoBs in?

Yes, but there is no better book on ACW. Most articles written by eyewitnesses! And great maps and picture material.
In abridged books you can never be sure that nothing inportant is missing.

I remember the Penguin classis Ammianus Marcellinus. They left the part about late Roman siege engines away, claiming that this would be of no interest to the reader.

Yeah, I'd have prefered the four volumes, but my budget just couldn't stretch that far.

Well sometimes the national park service has OOB's posted on the respective battle websites. However I do recommend A Guide to the Battles of the American Revolution by Savas & Dameron as a general reference for the whole conflict. Drilling down to the exact troop returns for given battle may not be in there but the general strength for opposing forces is. Ironically it really does lend itself to the BP: LAoK style of play. It would be remiss to not include the book includes clearly diagramed maps and a index of what regiments and in which battles there were present. I recommend it and the related title The Guns of Independence: The Siege of Yorktown, 1781.
