Horse Barding

Postby Johnp4000 » Wed Jul 18, 2012 1:17 pm

I have been painting a batch of Perry's Agincourt range mounted Knights when a friend arrived to borrow the non barded horsemen for a Late medieval 1450's battle, saying that cloth barding was obsolete by then. I have never seen a WOTR range with cloth barding for horses but does anyone know when roughly was the last time that cloth barding was used in battle?

Not too sure, I know Teutonic Knight's full cloth barding (/caparison) is often portrayed in the 1410 Grunwald Battle (but this was Central/Eastern Europe). Some illustration do show limited cloth barding under the horse's armour though in the War of the Roses:

This pic is from a 15th. century text so caprisons were still in use then. Although this illustration is of tournament combatants is it not unresonable to assume that they would have used such coverings in battle?
