Question about Wars of the Roses Banners

Postby Wakmaggot » Thu Feb 23, 2012 12:09 am

Evening folks,

Someone on here's bound to know more about this than I do!

I'm building up small forces for both sides of the WotR and I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a little bit of help regarding the distribution of banners throughout the armies. Would it be correct to give each "unit" (in my case three 40 x 40mm bases with four figures on each - I said this was small! :) ) a banner? I'm presuming that they'd all need something to reform under if they got split up and also to signal their allegiance the battlefield but I'm quite often wrong about these things! My plan is to give each unit a subtle variation on the livery badges and colours on their banners but if that's not the way to be going about things then I'll happily change things.

Thanks in advance.

Most Rose war armies are formed by units from contractors. And from militias. All had a banner. A 1 in 12 ratio in a gaming army looks great. But the contractors supplied units of very different sizes.

There is a usefull 3 volume series by Thomas Coveney "Heraldic banners of the Wars of the Roses. Freezywater Publications 1996 It shows the banners of all the main nobles etc. associated with the war. Organised by counties. Including short biographies.

Also, visit the Grimsby Wargames club website. They kindly posted up several pages of flags covering the WOTR and other conflicts too. Free to download and print.

That is a superb link Al, they've got loads of flags from all sorts of different conflicts, and all free! That's gone straight into my favourites file.

It is isn't it. Thing is, one of our newer members is a member of that club and failed to mention it. Probably thought we already knew! :D Mind you, I'd forgotten to mention it before.
