Yeah the cheaper the better. I actually took my itsy bitsy Vallejo bottle to home depot and had them match it for me in one of their trials pots. I get a huge amount of paint that matches my earth tone really well for like $3 USD. Ill be careful with the hot glue thanks for the heads up. Also i guess ill use more grays in my dry brushing for the ground. Ill post some pictures here in a bit of what i have so far. :D

Alright so i managed to finally get my hands on a mat of rubberized hose hair. i cut a rectangle out to length with scissors but how do i make it look more natural? do i just pull it apart before i glue it on?? :|

I leave the bottom part that is going to be glued flat, and rough up the top edges a bit with scissors so that the whole thing looks a bit less square. Depending on how thick the mat you have is you may need to thin it a little, mine are about half the thickness of the mat. Cutting the mat in half also helps to make it look a little less even. Apart from that the open structure of the horsehair itself pretty much takes care of it.

I tend to glue the stuff edge on rather than side on (if that makes sense). It seems to look a bit more natural that way. You will need to push it quite hard into the hot glue (ouch :P ).
