The shuttering used to provide a mould for the concrete leaves an impression of itself in the face of the concrete. If the shuttering was made up of boards say the size of modern scaffold planks that would give the layered effect. You can sometimes even make out the woodgrain in the face of the concrete.
Using plywood for the model is an inspired idea and really pulls off the effect perfectly.

Often but some partswere cast in one go. The texture is actually created by the timber frame they built as a mould.

As can be seen on this...

The last series of photos of the bunker finished. It's made of foam, sanded and flocked. And painted with two tones of brown: Americana Burnt Umber and Terra Cotta. Is the worst part because I'm a newcomer with the hot wire cutter.

What a brilliant wee piece.

Thanks all for the new info. I shall have to select something unimportant to eject from ym brain to make room ... something like my brothers' birthdays should do.

This is how they poured our basement - circa 1895. You can see the grains, knots, etc and it looks layered, but it is a single pour.

Stunning model!!!!!
