Gun frames

Postby smolders » Tue Feb 14, 2012 1:41 am

Fellows:

What colour do oyu paint wooden gun frames? I usualy paint them wood-y-ish browns, but as I am sitting here I' m thinking perhaps a more grey exposed wood colour might be in order.

Thoughts?

It really depends on when the gun frame fits into period-wise.

My Nap gun frames are painted green, for example. Many others are black, while some are wood.

If it is an ECW or TYW era gun I would paint it some colour like blue, red or yellow, as there isevidence tat this was common practice. I did mine a not too bright red.

Sorry, I should have said English Civil war adn napoleonic time periods. That being said Mikeland mentions evidence that TYW and ECW frames were painted. Can anyone point me to a reference for that please?

It makes sense that they would be painted, you would not want something as important and expensive as a cannon to go U/S because some bugger saved 5d by not painting the carriage.

I was skimming a copy of Shipwright, a model making annual by Conway Maritime Press and it had an article on period paint. The bit I remember is that red was used below decks because it was cheap and hard wearing not because of any nonsense about the colour of blood, that is the same sort of twaddle as calling a sword's fuller a blood groove. Maybe I should actually read the article but the book is way down on the reading list.
