ECW field boundaries...

Postby anevilgiraffe » Sun Jul 24, 2011 1:10 pm

ok, so I'm guessing in the main hedges... some stonewall or various types...

from googling, I'm seeing a lot of wicker fencing which looks quite nice... any ideas on how to make that or is it commerically available?

I've seen some tutorials on wicker fencing - basically you put vertical supports into a base and then weave a thin something (wire, lawn-strimmer thread, very thin plant stems) around them. It's time consuming but will give a very nice effect.

I've cheated in the past and used sacking material cut to size and brushed with PVA & water. It doesn't stand up to close scrutiny but it's fine for tabletop use.

Mostly hedges, but much bigger and thicker ones than the ones you see today.

As BigMike suggests, really overgrown hedges with trees/shrubs etc. I shall try and post some pictures up tomorrow of some examples.

Hmm some hedges for sure , but an awful lot of ditches too rather than hedges,,,and boudary stones too..

Britain became "enclosed" as it looks today a bit later than our period..

steep-sided lanes: trackways that have been worn down by the constant passage of human footfall over hundreds of years, large hedges either side (I believe these are called 'Holloways') and do not forget streams (I imagine there were a lot more that have been covered over) and marshes.

You can get resin wicker fence sections from a number of sources - not sure if WG do any - from Hovels and similar places, however IMO they tend to need a bit of work filling holes and getting them to match. Also, this can be expensive in doing large(ish) sections.

As The Cubster says, using wooden posts drilled into a base and then using something to wind round them is the way to go. The something I use is soft fuse wire (grey/black). For 28mm scale figures you need some apx 1mm thick. Without painting I can manage about two feet in an hour.

Allthough I was thinking these may be for smaller 'enclosures' not neccesarily for large fields. When you say boundary stones John, do you mean walls? or just a row of stones? or just big ones at the fields edge?

So anyone got any ideas on how to model boundary ditches? John any idea how large/deep these may have been?
