Light Colours and Quickshade

Postby Dragonfire Games » Sat Jul 09, 2011 7:45 am

I am a huge fan of all the Army painter Sprays and the Quickshades. I find them extemely good with more sombre colours but as yet have not managed to master the brighter colours. They consistently come out dirty. Could anybody please let me know of a technique, (other than going back over the whites and yellows) for applying any or all of the Quickshades (I have tried them all).

Much appreciated :D

What I've taken to doing with 'Strong Tone' over white, is to wait a short while (20 minutes?) for the 'dip' (which I paint on) to begin to dry, then take a brush dampened with white spirit and 'drybrush' over the highlights. This removes the brown 'staining' from the highlights, and creates brighter, cleaner, whites. You need to keep cleaning and 're-dampening' the brush as you work on more figures. It takes a little longer, but not as long as painting on a highlight, and the effect is about the same.

Hi Phil,

When you say white spirit can you please give an example of what you are using. Really appreciate the reply sounds like it is a great idea and Yup very true, if it can save on repainting the white then its a winner for me. :D

'White spirit' is what it's called, it's not just a spirit that is white. It's a common paraffin-based paint-thinning solvent, so anything like paint thinner, turpentine, turpentine substitute etc.. would be similar. You'll get it at any hardware store but if you're under 18 there might be restrictions on who can buy it.

I'll have to give this a try. The stuff I use to clean my brushes after using Quickshade should probably work.
