Using WMA shock basing?

Postby NJB » Wed Jun 27, 2012 4:53 pm

Hi,

I currently play Warmaster Ancients & Medieval but want to look at HC. It looks great to me but I have to try to convince the other players at the club and the biggest bug bear is going to be any need to rebase. The standard infantry and cavalry are no problem with 3 bases being a standard unit. However, the problem comes with shock based cavalry and infantry.

Is it possible to play witha shock base unit having half the width of a "normal" unit or will this upset the mechanisms too much? i.e. 3 shock based stands facing the short edge -V- 3 stands facing the long edge

Cheers

Yes it is. The shock basing will occasionally allow two units against a single one, but it shouldn't be a big problem, really. Get stuck in and give it a go.

A word of warning, though. While HC has its roots in Warmaster, you will need to "forget" almost everything you have learned in Warmaster. I had this problem when I first played Black Powder when it was released. It is easy to think Warmaster and transfer interpretations across. They most definitely aren't the same and you will come unstuck if you do it. However, you won't be disappointed and you will find that the rules play much faster. There is no need for army lists, but if you all have Warmaster armies to the Wm lists, everything should be alright and fairly balanced.

Don't forget to tell us how your game goes and don't hesitate to ask any questions that may arise. :D

You might just try blu-tacking your shock based units onto regular bases in the other orientation to ease confusion.
