Warlord...Roman with shield as a weapon

Postby Biggus Dickus » Thu Jun 02, 2011 2:14 pm

Just want to address this to Paul or John really and if they don't notice this thread i might have to PM them for an answer!. As for the rest of you please agree or not!!!….I'm sure your votes count!Carvel2 recently posted a picture of a Roman wedge formation with the guy at the front using his shield edge as a weapon, now i seem to remember seeing this in a movie recently but can not remember which one…….I personally would like to see a metal roman legionary sculpted in a dynamic pose using his shield edge as a weapon……..maybe even 3 or 4 different poses to illustrate this obvious weapon in a pack!….We always think of a shield in it's defence use but rarely as a means of pushing an enemy off balance , or using the edge to decapitate an enemy.it would certainly make the front line of a formation look a little more aggressive………is it something that could be done?……….if not it is something that can be done with a plastic Roman but it would lack that drama in the pose that a specifically designed figure would have.

Warlord...Roman with shield as a weapon

If I remember correctly, Titus Pullo does this in the 'Rome' series. But at the time he was drunk, had broken formation and was in a mad frenzy, so it's not likely to be an ideal pose for everyday use.
"You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me, it's a full time job." – Lt. Bromhead to Prince Dabulamanzi before the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

Warlord...Roman with shield as a weapon

Postby Titus Flavius » Thu Jun 02, 2011 5:16 pm

I've seen reenactors do it, using the edge of the shield. The accounts definitely talk about the boss of the shield being used as a weapon. Why not the edge? In Gladiator, during one of the fight scenes, the great big Gaul character uses the edge of his scutum to finish off a downed foe.
Pardon me, Julius! Here wast thou bay'd, brave hart;
Here didst thou fall; and here thy hunters stand,
Sign'd in thy spoil, and crimson'd in thy lethe.
- Julius Caesar, Act 3 Scene 1

hi Bigguss! yes  Its a thing that I imagine  that certainly could happen mate.. A smash with the edge of a heavy shield would really ruin your day wouldnt it... I think a few front rankers doing just that would be very cool...Confused Cheers  john s

 Many thanks for that John,Smile Now I know what all those plastic veterens have been doing with their shields! I look forward to seeing a few metal "Roman Berserkers" in a webstore somewhere near here soon.....................hopefullyWink As for the rest of you guys, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, i think now that it crops up in quite a few TV series/movies....I certainly saw Titus Pullo do it the other night when i checked! and yes Gladiator........really when in combat you use anything you can lay your hands on to smash into your enemy so using a scutum would likely have been something that happened a fair bit.

I'm sure a small pack of Legionaries/Auxilia taking the fight to the enemy rather than the more usual 'receiving' poses would be a nice addition to the range - as well as loads of fun.Consider it so.No promises on release date but it'll go on the list.Cheers,Paul
