Hoplite vs phalangites

Postby Gunfreak » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:50 pm

It's not perfectacly clear, but should the old style hoplite phalanx only be 3 ranks, while only warbands and pike blocks should be 4 ranks?

Yes- or even Hoplite Phalanx in only 2 ranks as per the rules, as discussed in other thread. They do look better when in 3 ranks though.

The great thing about Hail Caesar is that it allows umpires, and discussion about interpretation of the rules. A phalanx only 2 deep seems daft. We use the same as warband - I.e. 4 ranks. This does increase the number of figures required though. Having said that, HC is all about frontages, so technically even 1 would do, but it looks appalling!

To represent the historical power of the pike phalanx, we have additionally introduced a house rule for Macedon which permits the phalanx rule to apply for a difference of 3 in the combat result, whilst only allowing 2 for a Greek phalanx.

In 10 battles of Greece vs Macedon in the past month, however, the tide seems to be moving in favour of the Greeks!

Keep in mind that the one rule relating to Phalanx depth in the rulebook is that pike phalanxes *must* be deeper than the long spear variety. You are, of course, always free to ignore rules like that if you wish. But it's good to be aware of those sorts of things.
