Casualty markers

Postby Snowman » Wed Feb 29, 2012 12:52 pm

Based on experience (and/or statistical calculations), how many casualty markers are needed for Black Powder?
I do understand that it depends on the number of units used, so perhaps it can be expressed in relation to that. "0,5 casualty marker per infantry unit and 0,7 per cavalry unit is usually sufficient" or something like that?

Also - and I direct this question mostly to Steve and possibly some co-designers and play testers - can similar figures be expected in Pike & Shotte?

as a new gamer i reckon about 6 per unit as that normlly puts them under huge strain to remain on the feild.

Well, I bought those very nice dial devices from Warbases. Very good they are too. They are numbered up to 12 and I just move the dial around to the appropriate number. Technically you would need one for each unit because once the first casualty is taken it can't be removed. I got 10 because I also play Hail Caesar, but for BP you'll probably only need half a dozen of these. If you're going to make your own, you'll need a few bases with some casualty figures on them to note the numbers. The dial option is easier because they reduce the amount of markers you have to carry about. They also come in useful for other games.

How big are the Warbases dials?
I like the idea of them but think they may be a bit bulky with my 15mm stuff.
May go for a base with a holder for a micro die instead but that may still come out a bit too large.

About 2 inches. There are now two types. I have the first one.

I found another thread showing a different dial http://www.warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4236&p=45779&hilit=casualty+markers#p45739.

This is another way of doing it: http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6051/6235258229_7b7518d2b9.jpg
I draw the conclusion that 6 casualties per unit is enough?

Another version with additional capacity: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-319qzlH2yX4/TgeRcoL6_jI/AAAAAAAAA3k/9IyAwJmzEuk/s1600/P1040398.jpg

Many good ideas! I really like the little mini-dioramas that can be build on the larger bases! Should be possible on the side dial version from Warbases?

Not knocking those dials things they just seem to be used because people don't want to paint up casualty figures. I just think casualty figures look alot better on the table. I work on an average of 3 per unit which seems to be enough for most games. It seems a shame if you have painted up an army not to do the casulties as well. They don't take that long as you are really painting half a figure in most cases.

While you are right to an extent, I find the dials most useful for more than one game. I use them for BP and HC as well as Sudan games with A Good Dusting, Force on Force, Impetus (though I hardly play that now) and others. I don't have to have lots of different markers for the different systems. I haven't decorated my dials, but I intend to, just haven't decided what with yet. They are very convenient and work as well as anything else. I take a more pragmatic view. Time is short and I'd rather be playing than painting up casualty figures. Each to their own. :D

Fair enough. I just have the one BP army (at the moment  ). For HC I was planning to use shields. If you are using the same dials for different armies wouldn't it be as easy to use specific dice markers?

I do that for Warmaster. I like this way and the dials are easy to see. A single device that is not easily knocked over. Dead handy. :D
