Is this right? Waterloo, 1815

Postby grant » Fri Jan 29, 2010 9:51 pm

I am wondering still about size of games, scale of figures. I got the chance to look at the book today at a shop in Calgary (at $66, it was badly overpriced - the books is available for $31 from Amazon.ca - order placed!), but I ran this as a sample exercise.

Using Picton's 5th Division at Waterloo, I divided all the troop numbers by 50, to come up with battalion numbers that would be reasonable on the table. Then we can add more Divisions and play a larger scale battle. And this way we can have one Brigade each, very quickly.

Here's what I came up with:

Picton’s 5th Division, Waterloo 1815

8th Brigade (Kempt) Actual 1/50 Use?

1/28th Foot 557 10 10

1/32nd Foot 503 10 10

1/79th Foot Cameron 445 9 10

1/95th Rifles 418 8 4

9th Brigade (Pack)

3/1st Foot 453 9 10

1/42nd Black Watch 338 7 10

2/44th Foot 494 10 10

1/92nd Foot Gordon 412 8 10

5th Hanoverian Brigade (Von Vincke)

Hameln Landwehr Bn. 689 14 12

Gifhorn Landwehr Bn. 640 14 12

Peine Landwehr Bn. 635 14 12

Hildesheim Landwehr Bn. 640 14 12

Totals:

Highlanders: 24

British Foot: 39

British Rifles: 8

Hanoverian Foot: 56

Boxes needed: Victrix 1, Perry 3 with some spares.

Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

So this means you'll be using units with 10 men as standard? I think that's quite small. I'd say: double or even triple the units to make them look good.

I agree, however in the interest of getting as many people into the game as possible, we are looking at as few as 8 per battalion, which means a whole division could be purchased for 2 Perry boxes, and 1 Victrix box, for the example above. Although I must also purchase the Perry metal Picton model - a Bengal tiger as a horse blanket - smashing!

The idea is then we will add boxes to beef up battalions, or maybe through different wars, never investing in 300 or 400 figures. The Perry's Sudan range is just amazing.

I haven't been this excited about a set of rules since Trafalgar came out, and before that, it was Warhammer 40k 2nd edition!

Well I don't think uxbridge is going to be too keen on performing any cavalry action then...

An interesting Idea Grant. I am keen to play and also to fit the figures on my table so have gone for smaller units. I use 12 figure units but am rebasing to put them on square bases and fielding units of 16. It would be great to field big units but I simply don't have the time to paint them and hold down a job lol. and want to get playing asap

The great irony in all this is that I switched my armies - I sold all my British (there wasn't much) - and picked up a massive amount of Perry figures. Now my units are ~36 strong, except for some conversions that will be ~24. I have added a mounted colonel to each command stand, and that takes up a space. I am finding the challenge of getting everything painted tremendous, however!
