68 Years Ago Today

Postby canadasteve » Wed Jun 06, 2012 9:17 pm

Guys just a heads up for those of us who game WWII. 68 years ago today the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Fortress Europe to ensure the end of Hitlers Germany and to give freedom to all. Please take a moment to remember those brave soles, many who had never been in combat before, and many who would never again.
Cheers

Steve

Military History Channel are showing a new series of documentaries on D-Day - pretty good so far.

And yes, we should spare a thought for those who gave their lives, and those who have had to live their lives with the memory of that conflict.

And 70 years ago was the Battle of Midway (June 4-7, 1942)!

Apparently early June was an auspicious time for the Western Allies.

We also must not forget the "Forgotton Front" ie Italy . This was the parrallel campaign that was going on well before D Day.

I can never understand why this campaign never gets more coverage it was just as important . I had 4 of my great uncles involved in this campaign and all got through. my uncle Jack who was in the Engineeers just suffered a flesh wound .

There was also the small matter of Bagration somewhere to the east of Germany later in the month, which sealed the fate of millions of Europeans to live under an alternative totalitarian regime. Bit of a lose/lose at that end of Europe...

Oh, that's just Western propaganda. You lot got the Lada, the Trabant, and other innovations, like a well engineered wall. How can you complain?

I can never work out if it was a good thing or a bad thing that Hitler and Stalin were around at the same time. On the one hand, without one the other may well have taken over the world. On the other hand, fate had a spare crazy immensely powerful dictator waiting in the wings once the first one was offed. I guess it's better than the one taking over after the other had ruled the world for fifty years.
