There's a bit in 'Quartered Safe Out Here' where the author recounts firing a PIAT at a boat crossing a river, I'll dig it out and see what he says about the loading.

Invisible Officer is correct. It takes ages to prepare the weapon for the first shot but for the second and subsequent shots its no more difficult than loading a bazooka. ;)

The only way I carried a bren gun when either changing position (50-75 yards) or retreating from fire was with the handle at the top.
All you want to do is pick it up and run (at the crouch) as soon and as fast as possible. You just have to make sure you have finished the belt otherwise you may trip on it.
When marching (in the field) I carried it like a rifle and when walking, across the chest.

AS IO just reminded me.....magazine not belt! getting my weapons mixed up in my old age  Also we didn't bother folding the legs when moving in a hostile area. The L7 (with belt ;) ) replaced it.

Gents... Thanks again for all your help, but I am afraid your best efforts were in vain. I got started on posing my first few figures (damn you Warlord, for giving me the option), and the obvious temptation to make every single model a Boys Own hero took over. Weeks of careful photo research, months of reading regimental histories, all overwhelmed by this:

Sigh...

With you on this one... my WW2 project I have just embarked on will owe a lot to Commando, Battle, Warlord etc. I aim to be counting piles of dead Nazis not rivets...

Logic has no defence against such awesomeness.
