Early war films?

Postby Paul @ Warlord Games » Sat Aug 06, 2011 9:40 am

We're all very familiar with the movie fare on offer for the later years of the war (Band of Brothers, Bridge too far, Saving Private Ryan, etc) but what of the early and mid war period?

A quick think only really yields Dunkirk, Desert Rats, Desert Fox and Sea of Sand. I'm thinking specifically of land actions rather than sea/air.

Anyone else got any ideas?
Cheers,

Paul Sawyer

A couple of real classics, Ice Cold on Alex and Cockleshell Heroes.

Darby's Rangers and Big Red One.

People always complain that WWII film and whathave you always concentrate on the ETO but it really is down to the ease of locations, I reckon.

  • Talvisota (The Winter War) is a classic!
  • Bitva za Moskvu (Battle for Moscow) covers the eastern front from the start of Operation Barbarossa to the Battle of Moscow very thoroughly (six hours). I don't think it's available in English.
  • Fortress of War

@carvel2: Let's hope so. :D I would certainly like to see more early war stuff from Warlord, such as T-34/76, Panzer III, and Panzer IV with short gun (Ausf A-F1). The Soviet scouts in the The Star would be a fine addition to the Warlord Red Army. If the camo suits were painted white, they would go nicely with the soon to be released aerosan...

I agree Fury :D Soviet scouts would be a great addition to Warlords Soviet range and i reckon they think the same ;)

The good news is the three T34/76 variants have been remastered and are due for release soonish - 2-3 weeks I'd have thought. Scouts will be done but not until the Assault Engineers are finished...

The main reason for the thread was me sat watching Dunkirk last night and not being able to think of many early war films not based on the Russian Front. Would love to see more based on the early war in Europe.

Great news Paul :D I am most pleased with your curent Soviet range and look forward to the Assault engineers for a welcome addition to what is starting to be a comprehensive range. As for early war films as regards the western theater ,well every film maker likes to remember the victories not the defeats and there wernt to many western victorys early on.But it would be nice to see an early war film to show just how unprepared we really were :(
