How much to paint paint?

Postby Dead Circus Monkey » Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:05 am

So I know I'm destined to paint minis until the day I die. I know this because I have boxes and boxes of unpainted miniatures.

Just curious, how much should I paint, get ready for, for when the rule book is released? I would like to have 4 nations painted up for demo purposes and just for gaming.

Now I know this will vary depending on what tanks and troops I use. But typically,

How many Sherman I am looking at in a standard size game? I would assume a lot less than flames of war.

Well guessing the rules are 1 man = 1 man, and they are platoon level rules, you will probably need to paint about 35 figures per platoon. 3 squads of 10 men, and a command team of 3 to 5 men depending on what army your playing. And add a 3 man medium mortar crew and a 3 man HMG crew for good measure.

If they are meant to be platoon level, I surely hope that no more than one tank per force is allowed. Otherwise we fall in the same sillyness Fow is famous for (ie a fantasy game with WWII miniatures...)

Alessio Cavatore is, far more often than not about little guys running about in strategic fashion and Rick is about shooting things. Both men's work has been "High Wargaming" so I very much doubt it'll be like FoW.

However!
Tanks in an Infantry based game need not be few and overpowering if the rules governing them were based on the real world instead of video games.
I can see them having a lot of support vehicles and transports, though.

While it is true FOW features way too many vehicles and far too few individual infantry, I personaly think that the option to have slightly larger scale skirmishes would be great! Say two or three tanks or armoured vehicles. Wouldn't you like to show off some of your ATG's. There impact in WW2 made a huge difference in the outcome of many battles in Europe. Not to mention taking them out makes for a great realistic objective.

I've been buying painting 3 tanks for the more common tanks like Stug III's, and Shermans. I'll probably go 1 to 2 on the rarer vehciles like Tigers and such.... I'm totally guessing, but the fact that Warlord has been selling them this way for a while isn't a coincidence. The infantry boxed sets either.

Thing is, I'd like to be set up with 3 Platoons of infantry per army so I can run larger games at cons for 6-8 players.

LOVE to see the game use more support vehicles and soft skins. Some of the best games I've played in involved hijinx with jeeps/motorcycles.....
