A question

Postby Guest » Tue Mar 24, 2009 11:48 am

I don't know if this has been discussed already but are the new ECW infantray boxes passable as TYW figures? I would like to start a TYW French army but I didn't know if I could with these figures.

I would quite like to know this too, I heard the main difference would be using the armour and wide brimmed hats.

I think there is no real problem in using these figures for TYW - I certainly intend to. there were differences of course but they are not that important on the whole, however i understand that there will be head packs available so more wide brimmed hats with the front turned up might be in line.

If you want to be more accurate you could model small details on the front rank - the others won't get seen. the thing you will need more than anything else are Cuirassiers as there were many more in the early TYW armies than were found in those of the ECW. But that's another storey.

TYW French would be the closest TYW army to ECW imo.

There is a new book out called French Armies of the Thirty Years War.

One thing I was thinking of doing was interchanging parts with GW Empire figures - to get a half-armoured look and feel for TYW in central Europe. I wonder if this would be feasible or not.

Judging from TYW films, overall I think that clothes for TYW were more voluminous than ECW i.e. bigger pants legs, bigger collars, bigger boots.

I also have a question: will there be separate boxes for the TYW or do i have to use the boxes from the ECW?

Look what I found:

Pics are all out of Eduard Wagner's 'Tracht, Wehr und Waffen aud dem Dreissigjarigem Krieg' (German Ed) , 'Ars Bella Gerendi (Polish Ed).

Quite hard to get and expensive. For the enthusiast worth every penny I guess.

A marvelous book indeed! I remember buying it in 1980 when it came out first - it cost about 20 quid then (I was on strike at the time and I had to tell my missus that I got it cheap!!).

It's one of the books that I refer to constantly for inspiration. Pity nobody has thought to re-publish; although I have seen second hand copies now and again in Hay on Wye book shops.

The fat officer in plumed hat directing his troops with a musket rest pictured in the book would make a fine figure!! (Hint, hint Paul Warlord) There was one made in 15mm by the old Mike's Models but he seems to have gone to the great lead heaven now and he was too small for me anyway.

Another subtle hint - the Perrys modelled the horse drawn sedan chair in their Foundry days from the book but the general's coach and various wagon transport pictured in the book would be useful!

Thanks you for that SP, it is very interesting.

Just an quick question, if it isn't a huge book, why not scan it? I have done this with books up to 400 pages before and it actually doesn't take very long, the result is that you have a permanant copy of all of your books. I do it with all fo my rulebooks. You don't have to sell or even give them away so its not breaking copy rite though if you were simply preserving a book that is out of publishing then it would be fair enough... hint...

Wagner's book is quite substantial. And many thanks to S.P. for osting those images. In English it's "European Weapons and Warfare 1618-1648" and I can't reccommend it highly enough.Edouard Wagner worked in the European film industry in the early part of the 20th century and the book is a callection of watercolours he made as reference, often from orignal paintings and equipment. In the time since I received it as a new book - a birthday/christmas present from my girlfriend - who became my wife - I have always kept it to hand.
