Great find there. I think I read the translation as 'Hammer of the Witches', which is similar to 'Witches' Hammer', but kind of suggests it gives them a hammering, rather than sitting in their toolbox waiting until some shelving needs putting up in the cave.

The title Malleus Maleficarum was intending to say that the work is the hammer to smash the wttches.

The author Heinrich Kramer had no success in trying to start a campaign of witch hunting in Brixen , so he wrote that monster.

He named Jacob Sprenger as co author but that brethren was against witch hunting. The poor Sprenger fought a long fight against that trick.

There are many differing editions of the Malleus Maleficarum. It was widely distributed but got never an official approve by the church or governments. The summis desiderantes affectibus (papal bull) included by Kramer was never given. He also claimed approbations that he never got.

The work is very confused, the numbering, cross references and named sources are often wrong.

Horrible that people believed him and gave him free hand as "expert" in the murdering of roughly 200 peoples. Not counting the many who died without his personal involvement but sentenced by judges who used his book.

Curiously enough, I was over at my local semi-indie bookstore on Friday, and iirc they had the Malleus Maleficarum on the store shelf in the history section.

Sorry, I have come to this very late. Why don't you take a look on here

http://www.dashingdicegames.co.uk/forum/

It is the website for the Witchfinder General rules, which are for the specific period. The author is working on a supplement that will include Zombies and other beasties too. He sometimes posts on this forum under the name of Black Sheep.
