Battalia Box Set Bases

Postby canadasteve » Tue May 10, 2011 12:16 pm

Got two Battalia boxes yesterday and have started to build the troops however I am confused a bit by the bases in the box. Could someone please put me right on what base is used for which models ? Many thanks
Cheers

Battalia Box Set Bases

Postby BigMike » Tue May 10, 2011 1:00 pm

Any of them really! if you're playing WAB it's best to base on a mixture of long and thin bases and single ones so you can remove casualties easily, command group on a larger base as they're going to be the last to die.  That said i've recently converted to making my own bases and mounting all of my troops on 40mm square bases as it makes playing with the army that much easier.  If you're multi basing i find it easiest to paint them in the following order.1  -assemble, clean and undercoat each mini seperately2 - paint each one seperately without gluing them to the bases - i don't paint the shoes at this point - they'll get done later.3  - glue 4 troopers to a base (Skirmisher infantry goes 3 to a 50mm round base)4 - Miliput around each model stand so you don't end up with a little step on the base when you flock it, then texture it.5 - paint the base as normal, remembering to paint the shoes at this pint too - i find if i do it in this order i get a good standard of painting on all of my men, and as an extra bonus as i drybrush the sand on their bases i also drybrush the same colour onto their lower legs - which weathers them quite nicely.6 - flock and varnish.Hope this helps

Battalia Box Set Bases

Postby canadasteve » Tue May 10, 2011 2:21 pm

Thanks for the answer Mike, much appreciated. So there arent any specific bases for infantry or cavalry ? I'm thinking of using Rick Priestly ECW 1644 rules but dont have them yet. Also looking ot use them for the unofficial KoW historical rules.
Cheers

Couldn't say about 1644 - though Rick is on this forum not infrequently so may answer himself, or there are others who play who might give you a better answer - personally I play WHECW so infantry on about 20mm frontage, cavalry on 25mm, though to be honest i think if you base constistantly to one or the other you'll be OK

Battalia Box Set Bases

Postby FleetfootMike » Wed May 11, 2011 2:24 pm

WAB/WECW are infantry on 20x20mm or multiples, cavalry on 25x50mm or multiples. Should be relatively obvious which are which in the Batallia box (hint, the infantry base sprues have lots of singles and a bunch of various multiples, some of which are useless!).1644 appears to use the same base sizes, as do the Perfect General rules and For King, Parliament Or Glory. The tricky bit is figuring out how to get a 4x4 block of pike and command onto bases such that they don't get all tangled up :D
