So...why is a secret a secret?

Presumably you are talking about the 'secrete' worn beneath a felt hat. It is a secret or hidden helmet. Some hats were also reinforced with iron bands. I have just found this example http://www.antiques.com/classified/25922/RARE-ENGLISH-CIVIL-WAR-ARMORED-HAT-LINER-SECRETE

Because the impact of the knowledge that a secret contains would either do great harm to those who do good, or great harm to those who hold the secret.

Bingo!!! Someone 'got' what I was getting at.... I must admit, I'm a bit surprised Mikeland didn't jump in here.
Okay - so WHY was it called a secret? Just because it was under a hat? As in "keep it under your hat" another way of saying "don't tell"?
