New Model Army question

Postby jhock » Sat Apr 28, 2012 8:29 pm

As a bit of a novice to ECW i wanted to know if the Warlord parliament infantry box could be used for a New Model Army unit?

I notice that Warlord do a NMA box set, but as it is bit more expensive I wanted to know if the plastic box could be used for the bulk of an Army, just wondered what the difference between the minitures is?

You certainly can use them. The main difference is the lack of armour by the time of the NMA. So don't use armoured torsos from the plastic box and you will be ok.

Thanks Grant, my allegiance has swapped, some one at the club I go to wants to start ECW, but he is a die hard royalist, he is in the Sealed Knot, one of Ruperts Blue Coats, I am more pragmatic!

I too started as NMA - sold those to a friend thereby ensuring an opponent.

Now I am of course a staunch Royalist.

Don't use the musket rests either, you might also mix some of the firelocks into your shot units too so you have some high-tech modern weapons in your units too!

Thanks Mike,

So armour is out
Musket rests are out
Bibles are in (judging by the ranter models you can buy)

Can one recommend any good reference books?

Reference for general history or for unit painting? General history i'd look at Trevor Royle - Wars of the Three Kingdoms for English Civil War, or for military history i'd grab one of the Osprey campaign books which should tell you most of the stuff you'll need for both sides.

Thanks Mike,

I could do with reference for both, also I meant to say 'any one', saying 'one' makes me sound a bit pompous!

...Although Keith Roberts (in 'Cromwell's War Machine') theorises that the front line in NMA Pike blocks may have had some armour whilst those behind did not... If I remember correctly :) it does not matter too much either way anyway I guess.

There is an Osprey specifically on the NMAhttp://www.ospreypublishing.com/store/New-Model-Army-1645%E2%80%9360_9780850453850. It is not bad but if you want to be accurate it probably is best to check what it tells you with other sources ;) :geek:

I notice it is out of stock, but if Warlord does not have it? I notice a certain large online book retailer 'Big Warrior Lady' have it.

Thanks for that westwaller. I was fairly sure NMA had dropped armour, but references from this period are often vague or contradictory. So some armour could be used.
