Sailors on land

Postby L-Plates » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:36 pm

Living down in the South -West and having limited space to play in and money to afford stuff - I'm looking at smaller skimish games based on the skimishes around Plymouth during the sieges of 1642-1646...... Now reading the book "Plymouth's Forgotten War" it's becoming very clear that a lot of the troops at times defending Plymouth or even fighting 20-30 miles from the sea were in fact sailors..... Any thoughts/suggestions on figures to represent sailors?

Nice, Carvel, who are your two friends ;)

good point L-Plates, I'd never really given much thought to any kind of naval folk for the period, could make for interesting skirmishes and such.

"Plymouth, Plymouth, what a wonderful town!"

As to the question, I'd be tempted to use standard ECW models, armed with a variety of nautically-themed nasty things, but with a prevalence of bonnets and those woolly hats whose name I can never remember.

Fisherman's stocking caps? or Monmouth Caps? Maybe a few fellows from the clubmenhttp://store.warlordgames.com/clubmen-with-pike-and-muskets-7462-p.asp ranges might look like burly ship hands? Don't forget Seaman Jack from the other set as well.

But also paint some of the regular infantry with Calico breeches.Where they blue and offwhite stripes?

Monmouth, that's the one. You'd think I'd remember it, what with the town being just down the road. I'm not sure when the old stripey trouser look became popular, but who cares so long as they look funky.

I did read an article about the use of sailors as infantry during the English Civil Wars, will have a look and see if I can dig it out for you, not sure if its with me here at uni or if I have left it back home over Easter.

A friend of mine spent some time researching this for a Slannings Naval contingent for the SK. Well he was an ex submariner (my friend, not Slanning  ).
He came up with a white(ish) dirty canvas doublet, dark breeches, linen shirt, blue stock and red and white vertically striped hose. Topped off with a woollen 'Benny' hat.
