Mussings on the ECW

Postby Correus » Fri Dec 30, 2011 6:29 pm

Cheers!!

I will be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about the ECW. In fact, I'm not real sure WHY I'm so interested in it at all.

Anyway, I have been looking through the scant books I have as well as looking on the internet (if any of you know a few good web links, pass them along) for information and inspiration.

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread where I can share various things I'm learning about the ECW. Hopefully you all can provide me with further information as well.

Anyway, a couple of interesting YouTube videos have already been found and I thought that some of you might enjoy them.

The first one deals with the various factions involved. I thought we had some strange factions here across the pond - but some of yours really take the cake (!!!) all that nudity and free love!

I will not be able to look at WGs Ranter without a slight smirk now! Nor the Preacher come to think of it.

English Civil War factions Documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ12VwvMvC0.

Another one is - The English Civil War- Blood On Our Hands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dileC4nKh-4.

This one has given me a great idea for a small game/skirmish dealing with the siege of Brampton Bryan Castle and the saga of Dame Brilliana Harley. Can't you just see WG's 'Mistress Miggins' being used as Lady Harley? Now I need to find a blueprint for the castle and more detail about Lady Harley's troops.

Also mentioned in the above video is New Englanders going back to Olde England to help in the fight. I need to watch the video again, but I keep thinking there was one preacher from New England that went back to Olde England and raised a unit. If that did indeed happen, this unit would be an interesting one to add to a Parliamentarian army. Do any of you know anything about this?

Hi Correus,...this is likely to be a powder keg!!!!!!!

Have to say I have some knowledge of events...but only in passing.....so not best qualified to lend opinions...but I'll say this about the sides....In those days the King was well......a Tyrant...the common man and his wife would suffer either way, but tyrants have to be brought down......And like most revolutions that start out with good intentions and thoughts of reversing the repression often end up as just substitute tyrants...the name and face changes but the people see little or no difference, sometimes it's worse...........The principle of rebellion is sound even if the results are somewhat mixed, however.
Whilst I fall into one of the factions against the Royals....Cromwell was no saviour (i'm not a fan) and ended up lording it over the poor serfs..........When he died and was buried his peace was disturbed so that his head could be cut off and buried without his body as punishment.....for me a kind of justice.....I've nailed my colours to the mast.............I'm for the people, the common man/woman/child.....in war they are just statistics.....but those people are us.

yikes ... :o
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Thanks Paul, I thought it only fair to edit out my thoughts on Blair, Thatcher and Field Marshal Haig, wishing them a similar fate in death to Cromwell might have been an executioners axe to far ;)

@BD am with you on this one, the one real chance for the common man/woman to change their lot... And Cromwell & co let them down... It would take three century's and a world war before the commoner in Britain was in such a position again!

Try this site, (if you havent already) it is a great resource.

ECW / TYW is a very exciting period, IMHO it is the beginning of real modern England/Europe. And was a fantastic age of ideas, the very fact that the Ebglish when so far as to get rid of the monarchy was an amazing leap away from the feudalism that would still be in other parts of Europe 2 centuries later... And lay the seeds for another much celebrated revolution on the other side of the Atlantic 100 odd years later.

Thanks Mike, support always welcome! I'm glad I'm in tune with you on the ECW....you are the man I look to on this!
So yeah, Parliamentarian side, but we just got let down, to be fair, no real surprise....that's how it goes.
I'd argue that we are on the cusp of all this again.........will be interesting to see what happens when the fake money runs out....
