Green Coated Units

Postby Correus » Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:31 pm

Hey guys -

Following is the over of Philip Haythornthwaite's book 'The English Civil War, 1642-1651: An Illustrated Military History '.

Image

The musketeer is supposed to be a member of the Earl of Manchester's regiment of the Eastern Association. Unfortunately, it appears that this regiment was for Parliament (boo hiss).

However, I like the uniform color. Do any of you know of a Royalist unit that has a similar color of uniform?

Have to say...I don't know personally....but I do know that a lot of the troops on both sides seem to have worn their everyday clothes rather than uniforms...so Green would have been scattered about all over the place.....I'm sure mikeland will have more info..as well as a few others.

The early of Northamptonshire Regiment of foote, is one, and Broughtons Foote and Tilliers foote were both green coated Irish regiments, who fought on the side of the tyrant.

The two Irish regiments were among those given the thrashing they deserved by the NMA at Naseby. ;)

But to be honest, if you want green jackets Manchesters orm Samuel Jones goodly followers of Parliament are your best and most famous I would say... ;)

Hope this helps.

Edit green jackets are my next planned ECW units, they do look great.

Reference "The English Civil War Armies" Osprey Men at Arms series:
Plate G3. Royalist Sergeant of a greencoat regiment. Text reads that " Colonel Henry Tiller and Robert Broughton were raised ...in 1640"

There you have it Green Coated Royalist (BOOHISSS!!!) regiment complete withthe refernce.

Edited to fix a type o

Indeed Correus! Long Live The King!!

..and say nay to these rebelles!

Captain Sandfords unit of firelocks, extremely brave gentlemen and loyal to the crown, wore green jackets (irish unit as well I think).

Indeed Paul, indeed..... believe it or not, smolders reply reminded me that I do have all the Osprey ECW uniform books (none of the battle/campaign ones though) and I took a look through them. After going through them I settled on a green unit to paint....you are NOT going to believe this but the unit is Captain Sandfords Firelocks!!!! :o

Just goes to show, great minds think alike....

Mine eyes were most vexed whence I did read these nasty and shamefuliy boastful comments; The king is surly to blame for the recient misgivings and social strife that preys at mens minds. He is guilty of plunging our most noble and brave land into the fires of civil unrest! A gross migiving that the rightous forces of the Lord and of Parliament shall set right. Rest assured onlookers the King is lost but the banners of the right and good Parliament shall lead him out of the dark. Drum and fife will be heard to hail that this be so and whence the first dry rattle fills the air it will be the king's, not those of parliament, whos hands are dripping with the blood of England!

Onward to Victory!!

(sorry got abit carried away there!)
