[quote="Cfury I have read stories of Thomas Fairfax riding into battle atop a jet black horse - yet another famous story about him is called 'The Rider On The White Horse'. [/quote]
My good fellows:
Did you know that Napoleon didn't cross the alps on a great powerful white horse? Do you see what I'm trying to say?
Just because the famous story says it was a rider on a white horse doesn't mean that it actually was a white horse it could easily have been a brown sway back stolen, errmmm I mean donated, from Mr. Swansons farm 2 miles up the road beacuse the white horse got eaten 3 days ago; A title like the "The rider who would have been on a white horse if he hadn't eaten it 3 days ago on the haggard sway back" just doesn't bring to mind images of the steadfast hero atop his mount turning the tides of battle and leading men to heroic victory... You have to remember all we know about most of these pesonalities has to be taken with the understanding that whilst some of the information is most assuredly accurate we must always keep in mind that other information may have been doctored for 1.artistic licence 2. Propaganda 3. in the case of eye witness, its an eye witness account of a stressful situation in the case of battle or in a less stressful situation perceptions often differ from one idividual to another and cannot be taken as absolute and always the 100% accurate truth 4. the big ego stroke..theres no story of Fairfax sending back a painting with the demand of 'warts and all' that I know of.
Anyway, I guess I have rambled on a bit, and please don't think that I am triing to say that I am an expert and know all because I don't, I just think that given our chosen time period we do have some room to be accurate and still have artistic licence with our dipictions.
