My ECW Armies

Postby Correus » Sat Jan 21, 2012 12:32 am

Okay - as you all know, I got a punch of WG ECW minis for Christmas.

1 - Pike & Shotte Field Army with Charles I;
1 - Prince Rupert;
1 - extra Saker Cannon; &
1 - Master Gunner.

Following is a pic of a 'possible' Royalist Army. Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. You might want to note that the amount of pikes listed are the actual pikes - you need to add four for the command portion.

Thanks to the fat man I now have most of the minis for the first army, but will still need to get more foot as well as some additional cannon and specialty minis.

That being said, I need some advice on building a Parliamentary army to oppose them. I could create an identical, mirror image, army but that seems a bit uninspiring.

What would you all suggest for the make-up of a Parliamentary army?

I would use kittens on spikes and children crying to represent the Parliamentarian forces. It's appropriate and historically accurate! :lol:

We so need an emoticon for 'yawn', 'yawn', 'yawn' yeah yeah kitten, nails spike yawn yawn yawn...

The only big difference you need between a Parilamentarian army and a Royalist one is... Oh the Parliamentarian one could be WINNING! They could be Winning, oh, not one civil war, not two civil wars but three civil wars.

And before you give me the "well the royalists won in the end because of the restoration" line... Also wrong! The war aims of parliament were not to create a republic, just to gain back the constitutional rights of the elected Parliament from a king who wanted to be dictator...

And the constitutional monarchy that England still has only exsists because King Charles tried to rule alone and ... Failed... Tried to fight it out with parliament... And failed, was offered fantastic terms but instead decided to, (like the traitor he was,) sell his country to the Scottish and ahem a second civil war.. Guess what... Failed at that too.

Infact we need an emoticon with a floppy hat, poodle hair and a foppish grin to represent Failure!

What a shame King Charlie fine First didn't just do like his son, get drunk and womanise, and leave the governing to those actually up to the job!

Hmmm but then their would have been. No Civil war, and hence no 28mm ECW goodness, so... Scrap that thought.

But seriously, I need some help with composition.

Were one more cavalry heavy than the other? Did one favor larger M/P units over the other? Did one utilize artillery more than the other?

Things like that.

I am reading up on it, but so far I'm not very clear on these things. I guess I need to read the Osprey books as well. I was hoping you all could help so I can start budgeting funds to apease the exchecke.

My goode Sirrah:

The best I could find for oyu is the reference in the back of WHECW page 142 first paragraph that states:

" There was little to distiguish the two forces until near the end of the civil wars."

Other than that I cannot find anything that gives a difinitive heres what they had reference in any of my books.

I'm sure if you poke around enough you'll find something more specific.
