Online Uniform guides req'd

Postby potter » Thu Aug 26, 2010 4:29 pm

I remember when I first got in to ECW arround 6 or so months ago and came across a great web site (that I was sure was linked the the Sealed Knot one).

On said web site was a breakdown of lots of ECW forces that are now portrayed by re-inactors and a small set of graphics detailsing their unifomrs. Very helpful and colourful it was to. It also gave a brief history of each Battalion/Unit inc Newcastles Lambs and Okeys Dragoons etc. In genearl it was great and very helpful....

Well I've gone and lost the link to it an buggered if I can find it anywhere :(

So, can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm sure many on here would find some inspiration and very useful ideas.

Hi Potter,

I'm pretty sure the site you refer to was the Sealed Knot site. It has been updated recently and is no longer that useful. There is still a page linking to the individual sites of regiments which may be of use:

There are also interesting articles from Baccus:

Cheers mate, you're right it was the Sealed Knot one.

I remember now as it had links to the other re-enactment groups around the country, and gave a visual guide to the uniforms worn.

Bit of a bugger that really. Frown

The newer (later) site is nice and full of nice (if somewhat staged) pics, but not as useful for gamers...wonder if there's anything similar our there...better get Googling.

I can still get that uniform guide from the website of the 'blew regiment of the london trayned bands' (its got a link at the side of the page) Sorry I can't put the link up as I am away from my computer at the moment.

If not Haythornewaite's book on the English Civil War is quite useful, although slightly dated. Copies are available on ebay. I got mine for about seven quid.

failing that 'flags and Colours of the English foot' by Stuart Peachey and Les Price(?) (no pics of uniforms though) is regarded as the definitive source by some. It is probably only to be recommended for the super-keen though...

hope this helps,

westwaller.
