Recommend a good yarn

Postby Clone of Undave » Tue Mar 30, 2010 2:12 pm

So I've gone all the way through Cornwell's Sharpe, Arthurian, Saxon and ACW books. I've read Scarrow's offerings as well as Sidebottom's and numerous others so I'm all Romaned out. I've recently read Saul David's "Zulu Hart", Vlad: Last Confession by C. C. Humphreys and Patrick Mercer's Crimean novel "To do and die" which were on offer in Asda.

What I fancy now is a good historical yarn based on the English Civil War, does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Can't add much to that list but have recently re-discovered a book I read as a child, The Silver Sword by Ian Serrailier (spelling may be wrong there) about some Polish children trying to find there parents after the fall of Warsaw in WW2. Simple writing style for Kids telling an important story from the point of view of ordinary people, not soldiers.
Have also started reading Pacific by Hugh Ambrose which is, to be honest, a bit boring. He's not the writer his dad was I'm afraid.

For ECW the novels by Nicholas Carter are what you are looking for.

Very nice read but he never finished the series (only five books have been published so far)

If you like Zulu War/ Victorian era novels I recommend the Simon Fonthill series, very Sharpe-like..

Nice read after painting some Empress minis.

'Sven Hassel'?? Hmmm..not my cup of tea. Well, 'suum quique' as the Romans would say Wink.

Cheers

Just heard that there's supposed to be a movie version of Rosemary Sutcliffe's Eagle of the Ninth coming out this year.

Those Nicholas Carter ones look promising although it's a shame they don't seem to be in print at the moment. Surely there are some other authors who cover the ECW?

Unlesss you like bodice ripper novels,Wink there isn't much about, though most Nicholas Carter books can be got cheap from Amazon sellers and ebay as mentioned by Terry. Check out the Linsday Davis novel which is out in hard back – Rebels and Traitors, also Celia Boyd's “Reason from the Stars” series too.

Lindsay Davis's roman 'Falco' series is really good, so i'm looking forward to rebels and traitors in paperback!

Nigel Tranter wrote two fact-based novels about the Marquis of Montrose, titled "The Young Montrose" and "Montrose The Captain-General" which are a good read. As history they require a pinch of salt but well written and entertaining unless you are an admirer of the Marquis of Argyle.
