Edgehill is my "thing", so I'd be really grateful for the opportunity to pick your brains regarding troop composition and uniforms/colours etc.
'Ney Bother' it is reasonably well documented and therefore generally accepted that for Parliament, Charles Essex's foot Reg and the Lord Generals foot reg, wore tawny/orange coats and Lord Brooks wore purple. HRH Charley One's foot fops wore red (some say with red pants but others say red coats only but you will have to reasearch that).
Purely for aesthetic value and ease of unit identification on the table,I have painted each of my foot regiments in a different coat colour, in reality regimental coat colours would have varied widely (for those that had them), as I don't imagine quality control was high on the quartermasters agenda!!, and others in the regt would have worn what they could beg steal or borrow. I had painted one regiment in authentic dress/garb (ie all in varying coat colours) and to be honest it looked a bit naff on the gaming table, so I re painted them,in this case grey, with a few different coat colours thrown in and it looked far better (it's the one reg that I get most complimented for at shows/displays...and it's a Royalist reg....grrrrr )
Good luck with your research
