Dipping vs washes

Postby vikingwarrior » Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:04 pm

iv been using a black undercoat for my legionaries and with the devlan mud wash they are looking very "opening battle from gladiator"

is the army painter brown spray Acrilic?

i usualy use Humbrol acrilic light brown spray its very similar to GW grave yard earth and i use it as an under coat for my German tanks i was going to use it as the base cote for my horses and sprey the riders black and paint them the same way as the infantry

Dipping vs washes

Postby romavictor » Wed Feb 24, 2010 10:35 am

i use the citadel washes on my roman army aswell. i apply the same methods however, just basecoat and wash devlan mud.

in retrospect i believe that the army painter dip would have been the way to go, but 2250 points of painted romans later is a little late to consider starting ove. i think that the use of army painter dip results in a smoother more consistant finish.

oh well, maybe for my celts...

i use the devlan mud and really happy with the outcome though i think its a little bit darker than army so i think it depends wether you want dark or light

I have been using GW paints since i started the hobby and have been impressed with the washes. Apart from the smell.

Delvin mud for the tunics, Orgyn flesh for the flesh and Badub Black for the chainmail etc. Great combo and i can go over and retouch/highlight with ease.

I'll post a picture some of my legionaries at some point.

Welcome Jonathan. I use exactly the same 3 wash combo, for colours like red, blue and green I tend to mix my base colour with badab and a little bit of water. I can't ever see myself converted to dips.

Not a fan of dipping, I know some guys on here get amazing results with dips but it seems to me that the effort invloved takes longer than using washes! I thought dipping was supposed to be quick. Anyway I won't get into all that again!!!!...washes and highlights.......I use G.W. painting techniques.....it works for me! ;)

Indeed!
A good way to control dip/wash is to wet the whole miniature with clean water, give it a shake, leave to dry a minute the apply the wash to the recesses where you want it. The pooled water with suck the pigment along so you only have to touch the area.
Obviously you have to play it by ear as to when the the model is dry enough for it to only be in the recesses and not too dry it doesn't work.
Works on armour lines on tanks and, erm, Space Marines for the gaps between the plates.

For the record I'm a Citadel Wash kinda guy but I also use Coat D'Arms inks which are like the Old Skool GW ones.
