Strong Tone ink vs Devlan Mud

Postby mrtn » Fri May 18, 2012 9:16 pm

Thanks to photos and posts I've gathered that the new GW Agrax Earthshade isn't really a good replacement for Devlan Mud (as you'll see in Sigur's example), but The Armypainter's Strong Tone Ink was said to be. So I bought some in my local shop and tried it out on some spaceships.
The two ships to the left have been washed with Devlan Mud, while the three to the right with the Strong Tone ink. I'm happy, and would say that any differences is probably more down to differing amounts of water and such.

Hope you like my spaceships as well. ;)

Excellent - what game are your spaceships for?

Thanks for the review, really useful to see the comparison... Will be getting myself some AP inks when I run out of Devlan.

Nice space ships.

The loss of devlan mud is quite worrying, but if AP strong tone is a replacement I suppose I can stop freaking out.

I was under the impression that strong tone dried ito a glossy finish and needed a matt varnish, but it looks like you didn't varnish, and they look similar. Is that the case?

Thanks for posting, this kind of thing is very helpful

There's Strong Tone Dip and Strong Tone Ink - the former dries gloss, the latter is relatively new and I assume it dries matt. Haven't tried it myself. I will have to get some soon though, down to my last couple of pots of Devlan Mud.

As Comte Michel says you must differentiate between the dip and the ink. This is the latter.

I did matt varnish them both, but then they both dry matt anyway.

I have found a great replacement for Devlin Mud. Secret Weapon Minitures do a wash called "Baby Poop". Trust me, its good. Their flesh wash is also good.

Mrtn- always good to see some Silent Death ships get some loving. I would paint up some for of mine but I have no playres locally in West Yorkshire, and too may other projects to finish!

So far i have only used the AP dips- I might give the AP inks a try. Especially as GW Agrax Earthshade is nt the same as Devlan Mud.

Thanks
