Thanks BD looks very simple to do :)

The water effect i am going to be creating however is going to be a rather still water, so i want a very smooth texture, wonder how i could achieve this, i guess i could just spread the silicone stuff out very thinly and smooth over it, although i am not sure, also where can one purchase this silicone stuff from in the Uk?

this stuff looks good for still water, although i can't vouch for it :P also it looks rather expensive :L

I thought about this long and hard...its a matter of cost benefit analysis. Ended up using varnish in the end and it looks 'good enough' for the table.
If money was no object the silicone stuff looks good :D

Great video by the way :) yeah, as you say a cost benefit analysis of the situation is required, found a source for the magic water stuff in the uk: £27 inc delivery for 18fluid oz so yeah it is very expensive compared to your method (which looks much more fun to do as well :p) although i do very much like the idea of being able to tint the magic water stuff with paints, either way i now have two potential methods for doing this :D so thanks BD for posting the link to the video, and also thanks Carvel for making the vid :D

I guess this wouldn't work for large bodies of water, or for any that need to show depth, but I've found a good cheap alternative for small, shallow pools and puddles is a bit of clear plastic cut from packaging (WG blister packs, for instance). Stuck down over a matt black or brown base, with a few rocks and grass tufts stuck on, it works pretty well.

I like that idea a lot, simple but it sounds really effective - and it'd make great ice patches for snow bases!
