has anyone done horses with the dip yet?
what colours are best to use, i assume black will not work with the quick shades, but what are the best browns to use

Best colours, dun, light bay, chestnut ... this site may help

Bays and browns are about as dark as you can get and still use the dip. (speaking from somebody who doesnt use it mind you)
British native horses should be on the whole flat colours, avoid spotted, skewbald and piebald, although personally my favourite markings...
Sorry went a bit horsey person-ish there

That's how I paint all my horses. It's only because I am too lazy to work out a bi-coloured arrangement.
Anyway it may be horsey-person-ish but it's useful facts for us non-horsey-person-ish types.

I tested dipping duns, roans, chestnut and even a grey in Quickshade Softtone and in my eyes they are looking good! That is if you like the look of dipped models...

Dun: The body is creamy golden although it may vary from very pale to a rich creamy gold. The mane and tail are black and there is a black line running down the back.
The dorsal stripe always gives the impression of a native in my mind (well, the natives I am used to anyway)
They also usually have black legs.
None of ours have white markings on the face either, but that is more their breed. I can only think of modern Welsh with white markings, but there are no doubt more

yup very true....
Interesting thread - thanks Maenoferren and Mr Happy.
When I come to paint any horses in the future I will certainly refer back to the link.
All the shetland ponies up here were hiding on the way back from work, cant get much more native than that. There is field of them ( well there are loads of fields of them -) on the way back from work but the little monkies were at the far end, hiding. I suppose I could always go and photograph my horses if needs be.
As my wife drives the things, and I act as the groom, maybe she will let me run along the yoke as in the chiftan model... somehow I doubt it though! Me I am sensible I ride big ones....
