Roman shield transfers - look awful with matt spray - help

Postby steve » Mon Feb 09, 2009 9:50 am

I have just finished my first unit of Romans, i have been painting auxillaries so far, and used the warlord roman shield waterslide transfers. I had painted on quickshade on my figures without shields - painted shields then glued on and sprayed with anti shine matt varnish. The figures look good but not the shields, the tranfers look dull and almost about to peel off. Any ideas or experience welcome - should i apply a gloss varnish then spray matt over the top ?

thanks

Roman shield transfers - look awful with matt spray - help

Steve, the matt varnish under the waterslides is the problem. Air gets between the transfer and the shield and gives what people call a silvering effect where the carrier film is visible. It looks like it's about to peel off because that's what it's about to do, the transfer doesn't adhere too well to matt varnish.

It is adviseable to coat the area to receive the transfer with gloss varnish, apply the transfer, then matt varnish to taste when the transfer has dried.

Micro-Sol do a decal softening solution if applying to an irregular surface or one that curves in two planes at once. This softens the transfer and allows it to conform to the shape better. This needs to be applied at the time the transfer is applied though, it won't help with tranfers already on the model but worth bearing in mind for the future.

Hopefully the ard-coat will hold it all together on the ones you've done.
