Wish List for Macedonian Range

Postby Suetonius Paullinus » Sat Mar 03, 2012 9:27 pm

While I was happily painting more Phalangites today I was thinking what else for this range we might could expect.
Here's what I'd love to see (buy 8-) ):

Companion Cavalry, of course. The most important unit in Alexander's army. In plastic so conversions will be easy
and a good sized squadron won't cost an arm and leg!

Unarmoured plastic Phalangites. Every phalanx needs some back-benchers. Sarissa held upright, they won't be in the first rank after all..well, at least not at the beginning of the battle.

Metal Phalangites holding Sarissa horizontally. My future First Rankers.

Metal Phalangite casualties. Even the Persians get lucky sometimes :(

Metal Phalangite veterans/ characters/ NCOs.

Siege Engines . The heavy stuff!

Metal Command, mounted and un-mounted.

Sappers. The roads in Afghanistan are atrocious!

Mule Train. Wheeled vehicles won't work in the deserts of Asia.

Camp Followers :P

Any other suggestions?
Maybe the Gods will be inspired to listen ;)

Cheers

You are 28mm?

@topic

Well, I don't think we won't get Alexander himself.
That's pretty obvious and too good a chance to miss.
I am looking forward to seeing what Warlord will come up with for him.
So far their Character/ General/ King/ Lordprotector etc miniatures have been rather sweet 8-)

Btw, I hope the transfer sheet for the Phalangites will be available separately at some stage,
they are a wee bit fiddly and I wasted a few already.
I still got 400+ Foundry transfers, they are unfortunately just too big :(

Good idea bout the transfer sheets - we'll add that to next week's newsletter I think.

Steve is hard at work on foot command packs. He's already completed the next release - one that hasn't appeared on the list in this thread so far!

After the command he'll be getting stuck into companion cavalry - metal not plastic. Loads more to come for this range.
Cheers,

Paul Sawyer

I can't wait to see what Steve's sculpts will look like!
Shame about the cavalry being metal though, I think I would have bought more than I could possibly paint in a lifetime..There is no ancient unit more iconic than the Companions.
Looks if it will be more of a small elite squadron now.
But it's great to hear this range will get the full Warlord support and I hope it's gonna be a huge success like the Romans or ECW 8-)

Mmmm, Don't really understand this, perhaps you need to explain why Warlord have an issue with plastic cavalry Paul.

From a wargammer/customer perspective I want a lot of plastic cavalry for romans for greeks etc....I want my units to be large, just can't afford to do that with metal cavalry....(it also limits conversions/variations so sadly I'd be reluctant to buy more metal ones when I already have Foundry metal Companions.

I don't really understand why you can't have an ancient plastic horse sprue that is universal, then when you need another pack of plastic cavalry you just make a saddle or blanket if required, then a plastic figure for the given period.
Persian, Roman, Greek, Numidian, etc.
(I might not be able to hold my tongue if i hear anyone start moaning that all horses aren't the same size shape blah blah blah)

Are the ECW Plastic cavalry range not a success or is it just too expensive to make the sets?
if i understood the reasons why I'd stop asking for plastic cavalry and set my heart and mind to something else.
Not trying to be a fly in the ointment I just want to understand.

From a warlords perspective i guess it is cheaper for to make metal cavalry, but it makes them very expensive from a customer perspective to buy a large force so it must a have an impact on sales....well it does on me because i don't buy the metal ones very often if at all.

As for a metal Alexander...I have a foundry one with the lovely lion style helmet..like S.P.'s avatar....but if warlord could make one a little more dynamic I'd certainly be interested in replacing him .

BD, does your Foundry Alexander match the Warlord Phalanx miniatures in size? Most of the Foundry Roman ones are significantly bigger than the Warlord Romans.

With my large Hellenistic F. army that's a far more important point to decide to buy or not than the question of metal or plastic. (I bought only one Warlord plastic set, WW II British. Hmmm, I still prefer the metal Warlord ones)

I would love to have a lot more cavaly in metal if the size would be....... . ;) Prodromoi please. And some Seleukid mounted archers.

Dreams.

I.O. sadly I can't tell you, I don't have any of the Warlord Macadonians!!! He is likely to be a bit bigger given what you say. There is a lot of difference in size between all manufacturers....by far the most bizarre is HaT, my brother had a box of their El cid range....he uses them as heavy armoured Halflings/Hobbits    to call those 28mm is stretching it to say the least!

@BD
My Foundry Alexander fits in quite nicely:

And I also think no plastic cavalry is a huge disappointment! And a wasted opportunity for Warlord.
There are quite a few metal ranges already available so I don't think people will buy yet more metals.
Despite the fact that Warlords will be much better, of course ;)

@IO
I prefer the plastic BAM! 100%!
It suits my painting style and my addiction to convert.

This chap's got a Warlord body, helmet and rifle, Wargames Factory arms and a Paul Hicks head!

To be fair, metals have often more and better defined detail and are therefore maybe easier to paint (drybrushing)
but do make sure you don't drop one!
