Legio VI Ferrata signifer

Postby NORTIVS MAXIMVS » Sun Nov 13, 2011 6:40 pm

Hi All

Like most of you Roman Army collectors I have plenty of aquilae and imagines and various signa, but what I really need is a She-wolf/Romulus and Remus and/or a bull so that I can complete my Legio VI vexillatio command group.

Does anyone here know if anyone manufactures such specific accessories in 28mm, or something that I might be able to appropriate and convert?

Cheers
Paul

Try talking to Keith at Aventine Miniatures - they have a pretty decent selection of Roman standards. Tell him I sent you!

Thanks Phil

I just had a look at their web site and see there is a pack of late Etruscan standards that might do the trick ... but, before I saw your post I had already ordered a pack of Faller Z-gauge cows ... so I'll see how these look size-wise before spending any more cash ...

Thanks for the recommendation - I appreciate it :D

Hi All

Well the Z-gauge Faller cattle arrived and this evening I have had a chance to assemble the signum ... it's a work in progress but I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Image

I have literally ‘beefed-up’ the Faller cow to give it more of a bull-like appearance. The size of the bull may be a bit exaggerated (the calves were just too small), but I think I can live with this.

After removing the udder and the paint from the cow’s head and shoulders I added Milliput to sculpt the heavier profile. The figure is Warlord Games’ aquilifer (of course). The plinth will need some detail adding, probably using very thin plasticard, and I plan to add horns to give the bull a bit more aggression … but first I’ll see how gentle sanding of the Milliput works out.

Many thanks to carvel2 for the original suggestion (see above).

More on my blog.

Cheers
Paul

That's a bleedin' great idea. Class! :o :D

Maybe you could have 'legio VI' inscribed/added to the side of the plinth?

Hi Paul

Thanks for your kind words.

There's a bit of detail to add to the sides of the plinth and I was thinking to attempt the lettering ... but the plinth is only 1.5mm thick so it will be quite challenging
