EIR Unit Sizes

Postby Correus » Sat Aug 20, 2011 3:59 pm

Ave Omnes!!

Okay - I 'think' I have all the Legionaries I need ordered as well as the Auxiliaries. I'm now looking at buying archers and cavalry.

I still do not have a copy if HC but have been reading the articles written by Rick.

Based on what he has written, and based on my personal favorite man to mini ratio of 20:1, I have an idea of how many minis I want per unit. However, I was curious as to what you all use.

So, that being said, how many minis do you all use for such units as cavalry and archers?

Also, what type of ratio do you use in regard to Auxiliaries to Legionaries?

I know that by the 1st quarter of the 1st Century AD the Auxiliary units (in terms of strength) equaled Legions. As time went on the amount of Auxiliaries increased in amount over the Legions. However, the Auxiliary units were spreed out between three types: all-infantry cohorts; mixed infantry/cavalry units called cohors equitata; and all-cavalry units called alae.

Right now I'm more interested in how many all-infantry cohorts you have to Legionary cohorts. Right now I have 2 Auxiliary cohorts to to Legionary cohorts but am thinking of adding two more.

Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Hi Correus

FWIW: I'm using a ratio of 1:3, which gives slightly under-strength centuries of legionaries and archers (24 figures/72 men) and about the right number for a tuma of mounted troops (10 figures/30 men and mounts).

My collection is working towards a cohort of legionaries (6 centuries) supported by 2 centuries of auxiliary infantry, 1 of archers, one dromedarri turma and 2 cavalry turmae. Three scorpions, one ballista, one onagar, a handful of engineers, a medicus and assorted command figures round it off.

Cheers

So your looking at doing skirmish type games on a BIG scale - is this correct?

Mmmm ... well I worked backwards on the figure scale really. The idea of representing a legion with a handful of figures per century offended me! I felt that 24 figure units looked the part, had enough scope for individuality (personality if you like) and, importantly, were affordable.

In terms of what sort of games I'll be playing, my idea is that the cohort and it's supporting auxiliaries represent a vexillatio of a legion and will be engaged in the smaller sort of frontier actions ...
