Some Observations From Our Second Battle

Postby Colonel White » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:10 am

At our club Bolton Vikings we had our second game of Black Powder with Naps.

Special thanks to Simon who composed both the forces and was our game referee and rules consultant for the night. Not a job for the fainted hearted! Time permitting I will list the forces we used for this game as I feel the sides are nicely balanced (perhaps too nicely balanced as you will see later) for learning the game.

I was paired with Brian with the French against Ian and Dave for the British.

Again as per our previous game the French started slowly with the inablility to give out any orders and only started moving on turn 2. The British had no problem and went full steam ahead and got some triple moves in which resulted in again the French having to fight not very far from their start line.

This game really hammers you for poor dice throwing resulting in the French right wing beginning to crumble under persistant Britsh pressure.

The French left hand side ( my wing) faired much better since I was using my dice and not Brian's!

We found quite surprisingly which contradicts the experiences of our first game that the cavalry can be quite brittle and Ian's Brunswicker Cavalry( making their debut) ended up leaving the fray by about turn 5 being broken by a relatively fresh French infantry batallion which we held in reserve on the left and the artillery.( Sorry Ian!)

THe artillery is one area we are looking at tinkering with as we feel they are perhaps not as effective as they should be.

By this time the French right wing totally crumbled Crywith one battalion fleeing for shelter with all the Officers and Army General on the more successful left wing.

On the left it was like a heavy weight boxing contest with the French infantry pushing the Brits one way and they in turn pushing the French back. The time reached 11.10 and we decided to call it a day and a draw was perhaps a fair result as neither side could claim overall victory.

Again another fund game had by all.Smile

I think you are missing the bit where Brian tried to order using his C in C and failed, the whole french side failed to do anything which gave the Brits the chance to draw, if that had gone better the French would probably have won, oh dear never mind.....

THanks Sly Jedi aka (Simon I presume) for reminding me!!

Another point to think about when playing is that you need to be careful in what order your commanders give their orders.

Do not use your Commander and Chief first like Brian did, because if he fails ( which he did) then none of the subordinates are able to give commands during that phase. Another words use your C in C last for orders.

Also I have found using march columns to bring them on or move them first is good as you then at least get going as they have the 'free move' if alll else fails.

Rich,

Problem with that is with the huge movement values of all troops you can get caught short and charged in turn one whilst still in March column, not good.

I think that some units may auto-move which should eliminate some of that problem (Free Moves p30).

Ok fair enough ... our table seems wide enough to avoid that in one turn, playing in 10mm in cm on a 4' wide table and playing 'moving on' like suggested somewhere in the rules or maybe in the RP interview in WI. Also the march columns can still get into square in Nap games if charged and infantry can only possibly move 36cm out of the 120 odd we have so maybe we have avoided it a bit.
