Black Powder Event

Postby Ben_Stewart » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:36 am

I note that the Warlord bods have mentioned some kind of event to launch the game, which got me thinking and wondering if there was any mileage in a sort of weekender event, maybe next year (obviously when the system is up and running, built up a fanbase etc)

Of course the game is not well suited to tournaments and a campaign style weekend would limit the periods available, but I think a convention-type thing could be fun. Turn up, play games, get the chance to combine forces with other attendees for huge battles, that sort of thing. Kind of like a weekend long grand club night.

Throw in prizes and awards like best painted army and worst tactical decison (I've gotta suggest one I could win, after all) and it could be a good larf.

Of course this is all assuming the game takes off at all or is indeed that it is any good. Which I'ms ure it will be :)

Thoughts?

Great idea Ben

Also for a laugh Best Beard Award ( As this is one of the requirements to play the game)

I think the tricky bit could be co ordinating it all , well volunteered Ben!!

The hurdle to get over if people are bringing there own armies to play with is sorting out which group plays with who ie Naps ,ACW ,ECW .... etc. Don't forget Black Powder covers a large time span. I dare say Warlord could contribute some armies to the ECW pot to ensure no one is left out.

But i think it gives us something to work on .

So chaps lets get our thinking caps on how to suggest this event is run.

Regards

Garth

With advance notice I could be in with a shot for best beard...

Anyway, I would hope that with enough players with maybe some bringing a couple of forces there would be a good number of match-ups available. The alternative would be to pick a nice, big conflict with lots of battles, say Peninsular war or ACW and do a 'campaign' weekend based on that - set scenarios, with consquences for the next round of games, that sort of thing.

As for someone to organise it, well it would be best if someone in Nottingham was involved - after all, that is where it would invariably be given it's the centre of the wargaming universe :)

Then there's all the fun things like arranging tables, scenery etc... it wouldn't be easy

Anyway, I may cogitate on it while we see how the game takes off and maybe come back to the idea in the new year...

Just seen the article in WI about Maelstrom Games' forthcoming gaming venue, 'The Eye of the Storm' in Nottingham. Very interesting, especially when thinking about a project such as a blackpowder event...

It would be interesting to get some feedback on this event ( Neutral feedback ) to see how well run the take up by new players etc.

If it is done well then perhaps further "Open" days like this could be arranged.

As I said before Blackpowder has potential to be really big if it ticks all the right boxes.

I support the idea for a Black Powder 'kick-off' at the local level…well at least several km out from Nottingham.Laughing

I think the concept of an event to 'coincide' with the release would need some of the basic preliminaries.

Takes a little time to organize, communicate, and pull off a new venture. I'd think before an event could even be contemplated in my little corner of the gaming world (US), I'd need just a few 'helps'-- such as a basic quick start pdf since there 'appear' to be few charts.

If anyone has any links to something more than 'reviews' and umm-uh- 'announcements' I'd sincerely appreciate them.

I really want this endeavor to succeed. Attention spans being what they are….uhmmm….Wink
