Formations and Skirmishers

Postby tkguthat » Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:25 pm

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will there be formations - line, column, square? I'm asking because having to form different formations may affect how I base my figures. It would be easier to form a square if the number of stands per units could be divide by 4 (or there abouts). Or rather, the square could look cool or shabby depending Laughing

Also, as far as skirmishers go, will they be able to go from skirmish to close order during the course of a battle, or are they stuck in the formation they start with?

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Formations and Skirmishers

I would be very, very surprised if they didn't include rules for reforming formation. Considering the affect formations had on a battlefield, they would be fools not to. What it comes to close order, 20mm square bases is what I use. This works best IMO as they fit together nicely and can always be put on the regiment bases after that. If they say that reforming reduces overall movement but allow reforming formation then that would work best. They will likely use a similar formation reform rule as in warhammer.

I would be very surprised as well. But there are a couple sets of rules that abstract formation - Volley & Batonet and Grande Armée. So, I wasn't 100% sure. We shall see.

Formations and Skirmishers

LIne, square, march attack, etc are all in Black Powder.

We get by just fine with 40mm squre bases with 4 models on. You could, of course, go for single-based or on strips with multiples but squares work best for ease of movement and flexibility of getting them into the various formations.

You should be too busy with plastic Praetorians to make smart-arse comments here ;)

Thanks for the response. Do you mount horse and cannons on 40mm squares as well (two horse, 1 gun)?

Thanks!

No problem - it's what we're here for! ;)

Base size doesn't matter at all in Black Powder - you can play with whatever sized base you currently have them on.

Generally speaking our cavalry are 2 to a squarish base ( plus a couple on single bases for flexibility of formations)

Cannon are generally one to a base of your choosing and then horses/limber on a separate base.

Formations and Skirmishers

Out of interest when you put infantry on 40mm bases do you bother with movement trays? I don't think moving 8 stands (say) for a 32 man unit would be too much hassle, less than most 40k units of course, and a movement tray may get in the way of formation changes, but I'd be interested to hear what more experienced players think

No, we don;t use movement trays at all - with the fairly regular changing of formations it makes little sense.
