skirmish formation

Postby ady2650 » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:50 pm

how do people represent battalions in skirmish formation, do you have a formed battalion and when your formed battalion goes into skirmish formation you replace with skirmish figures or do you separate the formed battalion ? I do the latter , so just wondered :?:

All of my troops are on 40x40 bases, with dedicated skirmishers broken into 2 bases 40x20. If I have to move a regular battalion into skirmish, we have just separated the 40x40 a bit to show the change. Sounds like this is what you do too.

For line units that only change into open order due to terrain then I just space out the bases a bit. A unit is four bases of eight figures each. Although I do have seperate figures for the deployed flank companies in Mixed Formation.

For units with the Skirmish ability i.e. those that can be permanently deployed as a whole batalion of skirmishers then I have the same unit represented by one set of figures in close order and a second set in open order.

Now the above is how my 15mm guys are set up to operate. For my forthcoming 28mm stuff I may just mount the Skirmish ability units on individual bases, using a movement tray when in close order and separating them off when in open order. That's how I work my 28mm Hail Caesar Light Infantry and Light Cavalry units that can change order at will.

I just separate the bases like Ady and Grant. Works well enough.

It doesn't but i'm not going to individually base my 36 man French Legere units ;)

I've also taken to adding an extra 40x40 base with two figures only to represent my skirmishers in a battalion. They fall back into line when required.

My units are based 4 figures to a 40mmx40mm base, with 4 bases to a standard unit.

When a line unit adopts skirmishing formation I remove the two end bases and replace them with (1) 40mmx20mm bases and (2) 20mmx20mm bases.

So the center of the unit is still 2 40mm^2 bases (with small space between), then on each flank of these are the smaller bases arrayed to look appropriate.

The single and double bases of skirmishers also serve for when units go into mixed order, etc.

Again another brilliant part of BP its flexibility

All mine are based on british 2p coins and now we are starting to use WARBASES 2p movement trays (thanks to William for buying them, as i paint the figures). its the way I started and will allow me game skirmish rules too later on. Also its a fiendish plot by an Irish man to de-stabilise the british economy SLOWLY
