Black Powder - Organization of Brigades and Divisions

Postby Atropos » Tue Jul 03, 2012 9:48 am

Apart from getting a War of the Spanish Succession Imagi-Nation army I decided to get one for Napoleonics as well.

Now, somehow I bought Pike and Shot as well as Last Argument of Kings before the original book (which is now in my cart).
Since I intend to buy my miniatures at the same time I was wondering if someone could tell me if the following is a legitimate army set up (I know that Black Powder is very lenient on army lists, but still ...)

1. Brigade = 2x 24 Line Infantry, 1x 24 Light Infantry, 1 lt. gun
2. Brigade = 2x 24 Line Infantry, 1x 24 Light Infantry, 1 lt. gun
3. Brigade = 1 x 24 Grenadiers, 1 x 24 Rifles/Jaeger (basically 1 stand of 4 dettached from each bataillon of 1st and 2nd brigade, might also be attached as small units of 12 to the brigades, if that is better)
Division Command = 1 gun, 1x 12 lt or medium cavalry

(I am planning to use Austrians with Raupenhelm as Line, Austrians with Shako as Light, Austrian Landwehr as Jaeger and Austrian Grenadiers as ... grenadiers. :). Cavalry will be Frenchies in funny coulours and Artillery will be Brits. That way I can go plastic all the way. Cheaper and easier to carry)

That looks like it will work just fine with BP. :)

Hi,

That third brigade will be very brittle because it only has 2 units.

As soon as 1 is lost, the other will be impacted by 'Broken Brigade' rules - at that point, your boys are pretty much on the way off the field.

In small games we usually play that over half the units have to be lost before the Brigade counts as Broken. Makes them a less brittle.

That is also the normal rule in the HC and P&S books.

Third Brigade is on the other hand the elite of the division, with both grenadiers and rifles, so should be quite hard to break. But true, one thing I can count on is crappy rolls in important situations. :)

So I might split them and integrate them as "small" units with 1st and 2nd Brigade instead ...

Thank you for the input on small games, small bdes, etc.

I had recently house-ruled this myself as it pertained to a 2 BN Guard div - I guess if I had read the rules closer I would have known it was intended =D
