Newbie question on multiple move in a turn

Postby Klingondeadeye61 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 2:37 pm

Hi, I'm new to these rules and a situation occureed in a recent game to which I wasnt sure of the answer.

A british infantry brigade advanced to engage a french infantry brigade but stopped a couple of move short.

In the french turn the french player ordered his Cavalry brigade (which was supporting the infantry brigade on its right flank) to sweep round onto the flank of the unsupported british infantry brigade and charge it in the flank. He had a good command roll which meant that he had 3 moves and could easily achieve this.

My question is, as the French cavalry didnt start on the flank of the british brigade should they be allowed to move onto the flank and then carry out a flank charge all in the same turn?

Definitely not! The rule is that the unit must charge the enemy quarter, or facing if you prefer, that it started its move in. So if the cavalry started its move in the British unit's front quarter, then its charge must end in contact with the front of the British unit. That and the proximity rule are specifically designed to stop that sort of behaviour. See page 58 under Positioning the Charging Unit. The unit has to take the most direct route possible, not dilly dally about on a ring road out of town! :o

Of course, the British Must then Form Square (or at least attempt to) and will then get nailed by the French Infantry charge ...
.. I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live, as the greatest he; ... and I do think that the poorest man in England is not bound in a strict sense to that government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under

Hey! You have to leave them something to learn for themselves. Although, it might not happen. Squares can be very difficult to kill off. They are tough.

They certainly are tough. James you will remember how turn after turn I failed to kill the Austrian infantry squares with my French infantry in our refight of Landshut!
