Couldn't agree more. I guess I'm very lucky in that the people I play with currently are more concerned with historical realism and period 'feel' than they are with winning by any and all means.

what about a nice simple "Units in attack column do/can not recieve a support bonus during combat resolution"?

maintains simplicity, and the feel(sorta)

Interesting discussion. I don't agree with you on this quote. It does not mean that if you use the rules as they are that you want to win by any and all means. The rules are what they are, a boundary to play with even if they are not 100% accurate with history. This one you "can" use at your advantage, sometimes the rules prevent you to do something historically correct in your disadvantage. I give you an example. You can never (not without a neutral game master) replay the surprise of the Russians when they found out the French reserve arrived at night. If you replay Austerlitz at the tabletop the Russian general always knows that the reserve will be somewhere and he will act accordingly. This is the case on the tabletop with every element of surprise. If you start with for instance 8 units off the 10 allowed, you know something is going to happen, in reality they would never know there were only 8 present.
