square and charge from cavalery

Postby alopex » Sat Nov 05, 2011 5:25 pm

Something that came up yesterday.

Blue has 3 infantery units in line and the form square rule. Red charges the middle unit with dragoons in line, 3 moves and only 30 inch away. The center unit forms square and succeeds. So the charge is no longer allowed.

Where does the cavalery stop. 3 inch before the square, or does it pass on the side and ends way behind the square with all the movement it has left, like shown in the Waterloo movie where they pass on all sides of the squares ?

Side questions if they pass on the side, ignore this if they have to stop in front of the square:
- do they split up to pass on both sides, and reform behind the square because they do not have enough space to pass in line (a gap of 7 inch), I once again think of the movie?
- if they pass on both sides, does the square has double traversing fire (1 on each side)?

In short how would you play this situation?

The part you are lloking for is on page 75, the paragraph before the title "Units with 'Form Square' Special Rule". The cavalry halts 3 inch from the square and then you can do whatever you wish with the remaining movement that the unit has. The cavalry can ride back the way it came or stay where it halted.

If there isn't enough room to get down the side of the square, then you can't do it. The unit won't split up to pass either side of the square. Remember that you may not have enough movement to make it to the other side of the square and you can't leave the unit split up. If you were to move the cavalry down past the square, then you couldn't fire Traversing Fire. It is like Closing fire, which would be a reaction to the same unit that caused the infantry to form square and is all part of the same action. A unit that is forced to form square as a reaction to a cavalry charge is not allowed to give closing fire against the charging unit. That is in the section under the title that I mentioned above.
